UCLA beat Maryland 54-3 in a Big Ten road game Saturday, giving first-year coach Bob Chesney a 4-0 start—the program’s first by a coach since 1949. The Bruins scored 20 unanswered points early and returned two second-half interceptions for touchdowns.
Maryland quarterback Malik Washington threw three interceptions in the second half. Ta’Shawn James returned one 39 yards and Scooter Jackson returned another 65 for touchdowns; Troy Leigber added a 63-yard touchdown run late in the game.
The win gave UCLA consecutive 50-point games for the first time since 1993. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava was slow to get up after a hit while delivering an 83-yard touchdown pass to Aidan Mizell; he did not appear injured, and backup Madden Iamaleava took over.
