Justin Verlander made his final start at Detroit’s Comerica Park on Saturday, leaving in the sixth as daughter Genevieve ran out to bring him off the mound. He allowed two solo homers and struck out six in 5⅓ innings; Detroit rallied to beat Pittsburgh 4-3.
Eduardo Valencia’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth completed Detroit’s comeback after Verlander departed with the Tigers trailing 2-0.
Verlander, 43, announced his retirement in July. Saturday was his first start at Comerica Park in a Tigers uniform since his 2017 trade, and only his second start of an injury-wrecked season. Across two decades with Detroit, Houston, New York and San Francisco, he won three Cy Young Awards, the 2011 MVP, Rookie of the Year and two World Series titles, and threw three no-hitters. His 3,560 strikeouts rank eighth in major-league history.
