Maryland would owe Mike Locksley $9.2 million if it fires him during 2026, USA Today reported. The buyout figure is in focus after a 54-3 home loss to UCLA, four games into the season, intensified questions about the coach’s future.
Locksley is under contract through 2028, earning $6.4 million in 2026. His scheduled pay rises to $6.7 million in 2027 and $7 million in 2028.
Maryland chose last year to retain Locksley and invest more in its roster rather than hire a new coach. Since taking over in 2019, he has had three winning seasons and consecutive 4-8 records in 2024 and 2025. The Terrapins had yet to beat a Power Four team in 2026, with road games at Nebraska and Ohio State next.
