At Dallas Love Field, TSA officers found a married couple’s pocketknife concealed inside a toothpaste tube in their carry-on; the couple said their son suggested hiding it, then surrendered the knife and continued on their flight without penalties.
TSA officer Jazmine Kramer spotted a metal-like object on the X-ray. Security Training Instructor Wade Brown Jr. found nothing in his first search, but a second X-ray review and search revealed the knife; tape on the tube’s end indicated it had been tampered with.
TSA guidance says knives, including pocketknives, may travel only in checked bags and must be sheathed or securely wrapped. The agency says attempts to bring prohibited items through security can carry civil penalties of up to $17,062 per violation per person.
