Chad Mundy, owner of a Jamestown, Tennessee, funeral home, was arrested Sept. 23 after a grand jury indicted him on 52 counts, including insurance fraud, theft and abuse of a corpse. TBI cited evidence of fraudulent burial-policy claims and mishandled remains.
Janie Carol Stockton’s family said it received an urn and keepsake pendants it believed held her cremated remains. The family’s attorney was later told by the crematorium that Mundy Funeral Home had not collected the remains for more than 50 days after cremation; the family said the urn and pendants therefore could not have contained them. The family also said it did not receive all donations toward funeral expenses and that a refund check was returned for insufficient funds. Mundy apologized and called the cremation problem an unintentional mistake.
TBI says the indictment includes 12 fraudulent-insurance counts, 24 theft counts, nine counts of financial exploitation of elderly or vulnerable adults, four counts of abuse of a corpse, two criminal-simulation counts and one worthless-check count. Mundy is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. A state board presentation said insurer records showed at least five death claims filed on policies whose insured people were alive; it put suspected claims at about $70,000, plus about $17,840 involving people in a guardianship program. State records show summary suspensions of Mundy’s funeral director license and the funeral home’s establishment license and preneed seller registration.
