Brian Posehn called filming the Season 1 finale of “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” “really weird”: its fourth-wall break takes the characters to Warner Bros.’ Stage 25, where they watch the actors playing them take a bow before an audience.
The scene was filmed on the same stage where “The Big Bang Theory” shot live-audience scenes. The same warm-up host, Mark Sweet, appears as himself. Posehn said stand-ins dressed as him and John Ross Bowie added to the strangeness; Kevin Sussman said he gave a bigger curtain-call flourish than he would have on “The Big Bang Theory” because Stuart is the star in the show’s fiction.
The group realizes it is inside a sitcom after Kripke hears a laugh track and finds their earlier adventures in comic books. Stuart’s device opened a crack in reality that let the entity effectively shut down every universe; it traps the group in a comic book to keep Stuart from undoing the damage. The episode ends with the entity confronting Kyle at the comic book store: “I gave you one job.”
