The 10th Pingyao Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon International Film Festival opened Sept. 24 with a Unitree AI robot dance, a tribute to four festival friends who died over the summer and the East-West Award for Hong Kong director Ann Hui.
The memorial film honored British writer and commentator Tony Rayns, Hong Kong producer Shi Nansun, former International Film Festival Rotterdam director Simon Field and Chinese operatic soprano Guo Lanying. Hui was recognized for bridging East and West through her distinctive cinematic language.
The restored version of “Spring in a Small Town” received its Asian premiere after the ceremony and opened the festival. The event runs through Sept. 30.
