At the UK premiere of psychological thriller “Verity” on September 24, Dakota Johnson said the film keeps viewers questioning what is true and whom to trust. Based on Colleen Hoover’s novel, it begins its global cinema rollout on September 30.
Johnson plays struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, hired to finish a series of books for author Verity Crawford, played by Anne Hathaway, after an accident leaves Verity unable to write. At the Crawford family’s secluded estate, Lowen finds what appears to be Verity’s autobiographical manuscript. Josh Hartnett plays Verity’s husband, Jeremy.
Director Michael Showalter said Hoover remained closely involved and has a cameo. He said the adaptation is largely faithful to the novel but leans further into erotic themes. Hartnett said the story’s lack of straightforward answers drew him to the film, and he hopes its open-endedness sparks debate.
