‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ ends its first season with Stuart and friends walking out of a comic-book world onto Warner Bros.’ Stage 25, where they see the actors playing them. Its creators said the meta twist let them explore unfamiliar territory.
The episode first puts Stuart, Denise, Kripke and Bert in what seems to be a conventional sitcom, apparently The Big Bang Theory: Denise’s birthday is the B-story, and Kripke alone hears a laugh track. They then realize they’re inside a television show and encounter other sitcom realities, including Young Leonard and Two and a Half Women.
Chuck Lorre called the episode exciting because it took him into territory he had never worked in. Zak Penn said the writers were looking for a next move that could keep surprising them and viewers. Asked whether there would be a Young Leonard series, Bill Prady joked that they had a poster for him.
