At least 19 of 47 Senate Democrats said Trump’s summit with Xi favored ceremony over substance, with no sign of breakthroughs in closed-door talks. They urged him to deliver more than $15 billion in approved Taiwan security aid.
The statement called for release of $1.3 billion in funds and a $14 billion arms-sale package for Taiwan, both part of the assistance approved by Congress. It also urged Trump to press for human rights and the release of Americans it described as wrongfully detained.
Democrats criticized Trump’s loosening of restrictions on high-end chip sales to China and said extending the US-China tariff truce did not sufficiently address supply-chain concerns, including China’s hold on global rare-earth refining. Some Republicans also called for the Taiwan funds to be released.
