GfK’s UK consumer confidence measure rose one point to -13 in September, its highest since August 2024, as households grew more optimistic about personal finances. It beat Reuters economists’ forecast of a fall to -16, though the measure remained negative.
GfK said confidence in the economic outlook also reached its highest level since August 2024, while the mood around personal finances hit an eight-month high. Neil Bellamy, GfK’s consumer insights director, said a deteriorating inflation outlook could start to weigh on households, citing rising inflation, energy and fuel prices and asking whether sentiment might falter.
Other consumer confidence surveys gave mixed signals: YouGov/Cebr and LSEG/Ipsos readings published this month were at their highest since February, while BRC/Opinium and S&P Global surveys showed confidence falling.
