Footage appearing to show Justin Bieber performing at Los Angeles' MacArthur Park on Sept. 22 drew praise from officials, who described the reported set as a sign of progress. Bieber's representative had not immediately responded to a request for confirmation.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said on X that the impromptu performance reflected progress in efforts to reclaim the park from drug dealers and make it more welcoming for families; he added Bieber was on the invite list for next year's Labor Day picnic. Bill Essayli, first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, also called it progress and said it showed what can happen when criminals and drug dealers are removed from public spaces.
MacArthur Park has faced drug and homelessness problems. In May, authorities arrested two people they said they believed were the area's main sources of fentanyl and meth; the operation resulted in 18 people charged with federal drug trafficking. In June, Mayor Karen Bass said she had directed LAPD to combat narcotics and stolen merchandise in and around the park, and described a restoration strategy including violence-prevention services, more park programming and sanitation crews, and permanent infrastructure to protect park facilities.
