DJ Shadow gives ‘Endtroducing’ songs their first proper live outing in 30 years

DJ Shadow played much of his 1996 album “Endtroducing” at Portola Music Festival, marking the first proper live performance of its songs in 30 years. He said the missing MPC sampler and multitracks resurfaced six months ago, making the performance possible.

Shadow said the MPC was broken when it resurfaced, but fellow local musician Tycho helped repair it. The hourlong set opened with “Building Steam With a Grain of Salt,” with scratching central to new arrangements designed for festival speakers. Visuals by Ben Stokes included the record store pictured on the album cover, and Shadow closed with later-career tracks including “Six Days.”
