Anthony Russo says evolving ‘Avengers’ heroes is hard, hopes to surprise audiences

“Avengers: Doomsday” co-director Anthony Russo says evolving its heroes is “very difficult”: he and brother Joe want to respect their stories while surprising themselves and audiences. Russo said fans differ in which characters and versions they favor.

A “Doomsday” trailer released nearly a year before Russo’s comments showed a more serious Thor (Chris Hemsworth) than in 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.” That film divided fans who felt the character had become “too silly,” in Hemsworth’s words.

Russo said the film’s large cast has not been fully announced. Confirmed cast members include Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu and Tom Hiddleston. “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters Dec. 18.
