Nirvana disbanded after Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994. Dave Grohl formed Foo Fighters, Krist Novoselic pursued music and politics, and former drummer Chad Channing formed Can of Clouds in 2024; the group released its debut album in 2025.
Grohl formed Foo Fighters in 1994 with former Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear; the band has won 15 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. After Nirvana, Novoselic played in Sweet 75, Eyes Adrift, Flipper and Giants in the Trees, then released an album with members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam as 3rd Secret in 2022. His political work included helping create a committee advocating for musicians and artists and serving on FairVote’s board.
Channing left Nirvana in April 1990, but played drums on its 1991 single “Polly,” recorded before his departure. Nirvana received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 Grammys and is set to receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV VMAs. Cobain’s guitar from the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video sold at auction for $6.9 million in March 2026, according to Christie’s.
