AMD said it will buy AI startup World Labs for $8.2 billion in an all-stock deal, gaining research on systems that model the physical world. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist after closing, expected by the end of 2026.

San Francisco-based World Labs develops spatial-intelligence models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, images and video. The company also works on robotic learning and simulation, with potential applications in robotics and design.

AMD said the research should provide insight into emerging AI workloads and help shape its roadmaps for hardware, software and systems. Li will report to CEO Lisa Su. World Labs raised $1 billion in a funding round earlier this year.
