Rome’s Colosseum reopened to visitors after a three-day closure following the death of a 22-year-old worker who fell 10 metres while installing lighting early Wednesday. The cause remains unclear; about 10 square metres around the accident site remain cordoned off.
The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the death on grounds of manslaughter and examining whether safety regulations were followed. La Repubblica reported that investigators are also looking into the worker’s qualifications.
Italy’s ANSA news agency reported that around 25,000 visitors were expected on reopening day. The government said it would discuss safety during work at cultural sites with trade unions; CGIL criticized the use of subcontractors and called for stricter checks.
