An explosion just before 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, collapsed a house in Athens’ Plaka, killing at least six, reportedly including four Americans, a British man and his Greek wife. The cause is under investigation; the mayor said a gas leak was likely.
Two women were rescued from an adjacent building and taken to hospital. Firefighters used sound-detection equipment, cameras and rescue dogs to search the rubble for survivors. After reports of a gas smell, Greece’s Arson Crimes Division and gas distributor Enaon EDA responded; Enaon EDA said it would investigate. Mayor Haris Doukas said damage extended along the entire street and the street behind the building.
