An explosion in Athens’ Plaka neighborhood killed six people and injured three; four victims were reportedly American. Greek media said they were a couple, their son and his girlfriend. Officials said a gas leak was possible, but the cause is unknown.
The other victims were a 77-year-old British man and his 78-year-old Greek wife, who lived in the building, according to officials cited by The New York Times. Rescue workers recovered the six bodies Saturday; officials had not released the victims’ names.
Greek police spokesperson Constantina Dimoglidou said the four tourists were staying on the building’s first floor and were due to check out Friday at 11 a.m. They did not board their flight that day. Nearby residents said they smelled gas before the blast. Investigators were assessing whether two nearby buildings could remain standing or should be demolished.
