Hyundai says it does not use—and does not plan to use—nickel from Indonesia’s Raja Ampat in its EVs. Greenpeace framed the announcement as “people power” and said public pressure influenced Indonesia’s 2025 move to cancel four of the region’s five mining permits.
Greenpeace said the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre challenged 25 major automakers to be transparent about the raw materials in their batteries, and Hyundai was the only one to respond. The group is seeking long-term safeguards, including official limits on mining in high-value ecosystems and protections for Indigenous peoples and coastal communities.
