Rome’s Colosseum reopened to visitors after a three-day closure following the death of a 22-year-old worker who fell 10 metres while installing lighting. The cause remains unclear, and a roughly 10-square-metre area is still cordoned off.
The fall happened shortly after midnight Wednesday, when the site was closed. Rome’s Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating on grounds of manslaughter and examining whether safety rules were followed. La Repubblica reported that investigators are also checking the worker’s qualifications.
The government said it would discuss safety during work at cultural sites with trade unions. The CGIL union criticized the use of subcontractors and called for stricter checks. ANSA reported that about 25,000 visitors were expected on the reopening day.
