James Copenhaver died in Pittsburgh on Sept. 23, more than two years after being injured in the July 2024 shooting at Trump’s Butler, Pennsylvania, rally. Trump called him “a true American Patriot”; House Republicans and Gov. Josh Shapiro offered condolences.
Copenhaver suffered a triceps wound that caused nerve damage; another bullet remained lodged in his body and damaged part of his colon. Weeks after the shooting, Allegheny Health Network described his condition as “serious but stable.”
The attack also killed Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old Buffalo Township firefighter, and wounded David Dutch, who was later released from the hospital. The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks as the shooter.
