Tomasz Kosowski was convicted of first-degree murder for killing lawyer Stephen Cozzi in 2023; Cozzi’s body remains missing. Prosecutors say Kosowski killed him in the firm restroom and dumped the remains in an Everglades dumpster; the state seeks the death penalty.
Prosecutors said Kosowski was angry because Cozzi represented Kosowski’s former employer and co-workers in a 2019 lawsuit he filed over alleged billing errors. They also said Kosowski stalked Cozzi at home and at the firm for months. Cozzi’s husband testified that the dispute made him fear for Cozzi’s safety; he bought him pepper spray and urged him to hire security for meetings with Kosowski.
Prosecutors showed surveillance of Kosowski entering the firm on the day Cozzi disappeared and leaving with a cart. They also said investigators found Cozzi’s blood at Kosowski’s home. Kosowski represented himself at trial and argued it was “physically impossible” to lift Cozzi, who weighed about 190 pounds, into his truck. The penalty phase is expected to begin this week; possible sentences are life without parole or death.
