The New York Power Authority has earmarked $1.2 billion to upgrade all 13 generators at the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant over 15–20 years. NYPA says the work aims to keep the plant reliable for 50 years. The plant can help restore statewide power after a blackout.
WIVB reported that the facility produces 2.6 million kilowatts and accounts for more than 80% of NYPA’s generation. Its electricity serves New York and seven neighboring states; some goes to industrial customers at preferential rates tied to job creation, while some is sold into broader markets.
The Next Gen Niagara plan includes repairing components, adding new mechanical and electrical parts, and updating controls. The modernization is intended to preserve a major power source as the grid faces rising demand, aging infrastructure and pressure from more extreme weather.
