Streeting says Russia threat prompted UK’s biggest sustained defence-spending rise since Cold War

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting called Russia and Vladimir Putin Britain’s top security threat and said the country faced its greatest risk of war in his lifetime. He said the threat prompted the biggest sustained defence-spending increase since the Cold War ended.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday before Labour’s conference in Liverpool, Streeting said Russia was testing British and NATO defences and the strength of their alliances. He said the UK had what it needed to remain safe, but that would not be true if its defences stood still for five years; he argued stronger defences build deterrence and make war less likely.
