Boeing says a 737 Max software issue can leave pilots without automated flight guidance after an aborted landing in one scenario. The company says pilots are trained to handle it safely using existing procedures as engineers develop a permanent fix.
More than 2,000 737 Max aircraft have been delivered, but Boeing has not said how many may be affected. The model was involved in two crashes in October 2018 and March 2019 that killed 346 people; an automated flight-control system that could intervene too strongly under certain conditions was a key factor.
In January 2024, part of the fuselage of a nearly new 737 broke away during climb, raising fresh questions about Boeing’s quality controls.
