Indonesian rescuers recovered 11 bodies after the Virgo Transport 8 capsized in the Java Sea two weeks ago, bringing the death toll to 64. Authorities extended the search for 71 missing people, all presumed dead, by seven days.
The ferry carried 213 passengers and 30 crew members and lost contact with its operator after departing Surabaya for Borneo. A total of 108 people have been rescued.
Four bodies were recovered inside the submerged vessel on Friday, and seven more were found along nearby shorelines, said Yudhi Bramantyo of the National Search and Rescue Agency. Officials will review the operation every three days; Indonesian rules typically set a seven-day search period, which can be extended if authorities believe more victims may be found.
