Snopes rated a viral graphic’s claim about higher inflation for household goods and utilities under Joe Biden than Donald Trump false, saying it could not reproduce the cited BLS figures; the graphic compared Biden’s 48 months with Trump’s first 20 months of his second term.
In an equal 20-month comparison, Snopes found inflation lower for 10 of 12 products in Trump’s first 20 months of his second term than in Biden’s first 20 months. The periods were January 2025–August 2026 and January 2021–August 2022, respectively.
The graphic listed the BLS’s CPI-U database as its source, but Snopes found CPI-U series for only 12 of its 13 items; the database has no series for “Natural gas.” Snopes said BLS figures differed from the graphic for every listed good or service. The graphic’s source remained unclear, and Snopes was awaiting a reply from the Denton County Republican Party, which posted an early version. An AI detector labeled two versions fully AI-generated, but Snopes cautioned that such detectors are not fully reliable.
