Peter Shimmin and Treasury Minister Chris Thomas won Douglas Central's two seats in the Isle of Man election, with outgoing MHK and Deputy Speaker Ann Corlett losing her seat. Shimmin said the economy and affordable housing are among his priorities.
Shimmin is the son of former MHK John Shimmin and an actor and theatre director. He also worked at Public Health Isle of Man, including implementing the organ donation law. He said he was overwhelmed and grateful after winning, and highlighted support for younger people and families. Thomas said he was pleased to be elected and cited transport, public finances, healthcare and food security as challenges. Corlett called her loss disappointing but said she also felt relief.
Four of the eight candidates represented political parties, but none won a seat. Devon Watson of the Manx Labour Party, the current leader of Douglas City Council, came fourth; Change's Sharon Lee Bridgens finished sixth, and Transform Isle of Man's George Hargreaves and Creena Mason came seventh and eighth.
