Senate Democrats seek a nonbinding vote as soon as Thursday, urging President Donald Trump to end the Iran war or get Congress' authorization to continue it. The vote would put Republicans on record before November's midterms but is largely symbolic.
Republican Senate candidates Mike Rogers of Michigan and Ashley Hinson of Iowa called for a swift end to the war on Monday, after previously backing Trump's authority to strike Tehran. A Reuters/Ipsos poll this week found 34% of respondents approved of the strikes on Iran; the war has pushed up fuel prices.
Last week, seven House Republicans joined Democrats to pass a war-powers resolution; three of them opposed party leaders on the issue for the first time. Since US and Israeli forces began bombing Iran on February 28, the Senate has voted on Iran war-powers resolutions 13 times, supporting two; the House has held six votes, with three backing an end to the conflict. Only one resolution has passed both chambers, and the White House ignored the result.
