Portland police dog Kylo, an 8-year-old German Shepherd, was shot and killed Thursday in a planned operation to detain a wanted person. On his final shift before retirement after six years' service, officers rushed him to two animal hospitals but could not save him.
A few hours later, officers held a procession to the Oregon Humane Society, saluting as Kylo's body was wheeled inside. Forensic investigations were to begin there.
He was the first Portland police dog killed on duty since 2014. Bureau spokesperson Benner told The Oregonian that Kylo was a beloved member of the bureau and that its K9s were like officers; Benner said people had lost a partner.
