A tunic some Christians believe Jesus wore during his crucifixion is due to be shown to Pope Leo XIV on Friday at Stade de France during a youth prayer vigil. EWTN reports it will travel nearly four miles from Argenteuil under tight security.
The Diocese of Pontoise says the tunic is usually kept out of sight, with only a small portion visible, and is brought out every 50 years or for special occasions. It was last displayed publicly in Argenteuil from April 18 to May 11, 2025. EWTN says the exact route will be kept secret, with ground and aerial security measures. The tunic was stolen in December 1983 and returned in February 1984; public records do not explain how it was taken or recovered.
The tunic’s authenticity is disputed. Its custodians cite studies of pollen, weaving and blood type as evidence, while France’s Ministry of Culture says a 2004 radiocarbon test dated it to AD 530–650, centuries after Jesus’ lifetime. The custodians say researchers cautioned that water and fire damage, mold exposure and burial during the French Revolution could affect the dating. The ministry says the result does not diminish the tunic’s historical and heritage value.
