Ethiopia's government says Tigrayan forces seized airports in Tigray and attacked Afar and Amhara, while Tigray's authorities say their forces are fighting defensively against a federal invasion. Ethiopian Airlines has cancelled all flights to the region.
Tigrayan authorities said a strike in Alamata on Tuesday killed at least 14 people and injured 22. The town's mayor said more than five drones and a fighter jet carried out over 21 strikes, and accused federal forces of targeting two secondary schools that he said were unoccupied. The BBC could not independently verify the claims, and the federal government had not commented.
The 2022 war formally ended with the African Union-brokered Pretoria Agreement, but both Addis Ababa and TPLF leaders have faced criticism over delays in implementing key provisions. On Sunday, the TPLF announced an alliance with six other armed groups to remove the federal government. Separately, the US State Department condemned a drone strike it said targeted a convoy of Catholic vehicles carrying food aid on Monday, and called for an investigation.
