A POLITICO poll found 83% of Canadians and 56% of Americans said President Trump was wrong to impose tariffs on some Canadian imports; 8% of Canadians and 26% of Americans said he was right. Public First surveyed 4,183 adults from Sept. 13 to 15.
The poll also found 57% of Canadians favored matching U.S. tariffs, while 24% supported making concessions to persuade Washington to drop them. Among U.S. respondents, 33% said Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was right to impose reciprocal tariffs, and 31% said he was wrong.
The U.S. imposed tariffs on some Canadian imports after trade talks collapsed in August; Canada responded with “dollar-for-dollar” levies. Carney told The Wall Street Journal that some issues he had described as Canadian red lines had been taken off the table, but said Canada would not compromise its sovereignty or ability to make trade deals with other jurisdictions.
