CNN analyst Harry Enten said a new poll puts President Donald Trump’s net approval among pure independents at -71 points. He described that as an 86-point shift from the group’s 15-point backing for him over Kamala Harris in 2024.
Among pure independents, Trump’s net approval on the economy was -77 points, Enten said, versus a 22-point advantage over Harris among the same group in 2024—a 99-point shift between the measures.
Only 8% of pure independents approved of Trump’s handling of gas prices; 92% disapproved. Enten called the split “near uniformity” and identified gas prices as a major factor behind the numbers. He said rising fuel costs amid the ongoing Iran conflict had become a significant voter issue, and that Trump’s overall disapproval had hit record levels as Republican chances of holding the Senate slipped.
