Police arrested Elijah Hemingway, 32, after pediatrician Idris Evans was fatally stabbed at his Pittsburgh home and his wife was critically injured. Hemingway faces criminal homicide, aggravated assault and burglary charges; his motive and any connection to Evans remain unclear.
Investigators believe Hemingway entered through a back window and went to the couple’s third-floor bedroom. Evans’ wife told police the attacker demanded her car keys, though police said he did not appear to take the car. She said Evans addressed the man as “Elijah,” but she did not recognize him and was unsure whether he had given his name.
Court records show Hemingway had faced other charges in Allegheny County since 2016. In July, he was arrested in a separate burglary and theft case and released on nonmonetary bail; a hearing in that case is set for October 1. He had not been arraigned in Evans’ killing as of Friday night.
