Mary Ann McKinzy was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and negligent homicide in the 2025 death of her partner, James S. Miller, after an alleged dispute over $3,200 in lottery winnings. She remains jailed.
Prosecutors said in court documents that Miller won $3,200 playing the lottery and shared $1,700 with McKinzy, but later accused her of taking another $800. On Nov. 28, 2025, he went with a friend to the Portland apartment where McKinzy lived to confront her. Police said Miller asked the friend to block her car; surveillance footage allegedly showed Miller damaging its tires with a knife. McKinzy then allegedly reversed over Miller, according to OregonLive, and police said he suffered fatal blunt-force trauma.
U.S. Marshals arrested McKinzy in Bakersfield, California, on Aug. 5; authorities said she was extradited to Multnomah County on Sept. 18. Investigators said they found her vehicle at a tire shop and recovered evidence they said linked it to the scene, including hubcaps matching one found there. She remains at the Multnomah County Detention Center, has not entered a plea, and is due in court Sept. 29.
