Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said the team discussed whether to pull quarterback John Mateer after his turnovers helped fuel a 41-13 loss to Georgia, leaving the Sooners 2-2. Venables said Mateer’s confidence was bruised but did not say whether he would remain the starter.
Mateer committed three turnovers on three consecutive second-quarter possessions: a fumble at Georgia’s 2-yard line that the Bulldogs returned for a touchdown, an interception at the 18, then another fumble after a sack. Georgia recovered the last fumble and scored two plays later, making it 28-0.
Venables credited Georgia and said the loss was a hard lesson, not a lack of effort or will. He is counting on the bye week to get Oklahoma healthy and help Mateer rebuild his confidence.
