Danielle Melissa Staten was sentenced to over two years in prison for helping prepare false tax returns. Prosecutors said she fabricated clients’ income and expenses to boost refunds; she must pay the IRS $1,508,171 and serve a year of supervised release.
Prosecutors said Staten used Schedule C forms, which report business profit or loss, to invent figures and generate fraudulent Earned Income Tax Credit claims. The U.S. Attorney’s Office estimated the resulting tax loss at about $1.5 million.
