Category 2 Hurricane Nolo was approaching Hawaii Friday; forecasters warned of catastrophic, life-threatening flooding, strong winds and heavy rain. A nor’easter could bring 80-mph winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding to the East Coast; rain may last through Monday.
Rain and strong winds had reached Hawaii’s Big Island Friday, with conditions expected to spread west across the island chain through the weekend. Advisories and warnings were issued for Maui, Lanai and Molokai. Forecasters expected Nolo to move north toward the Big Island Friday, slow considerably Saturday morning and turn west later that day; they cautioned that its exact track could change.
Forecasters called for up to 8 inches of rain in southeastern Massachusetts, up to 2 inches in Boston from Friday into Saturday, and a similar amount in New York City from Saturday into Sunday. High-wind warnings were in place near Boston. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared an emergency in Nassau, Suffolk, New York City and Westchester and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel. Officials warned of beach erosion, coastal flooding, wind damage and outages; major travel hubs could face delays. AccuWeather meteorologist Elizabeth Danco said recent soaking rains left the region more susceptible to falling trees and flooding.
