Piers Morgan says he is pursuing legal action against Charles Spencer and publisher Penguin over claims in Spencer’s Diana memoir. Spencer apologized for wrongly linking Morgan to Diana’s 1993 gym photos but stands by his separate account of a 1997 funeral call.
Spencer wrote that Morgan and a Sunday Mirror counterpart published hidden-camera photos of Diana exercising in a leotard. The Daily Mirror published the pictures on Nov. 7, 1993; Morgan said he was then writing for The Sun and joined the Mirror nearly two years later. Spencer said he had assumed Morgan was responsible because he had edited the paper, then accepted that assumption was wrong.
Morgan says he wants the claims about him and the photos removed, with damages paid to the King’s Trust. Spencer maintains the separate funeral account, saying he called newspaper editors before the service to ask them to stay away; he wrote that most agreed, while Morgan alone sounded surly rather than confused or embarrassed.
