Police say Jeremy Johnson, 38, fled an Eastpointe stop Sept. 25 after being told he was under arrest over an alleged theft from a closed garden center. His truck struck an officer; the trailer ran over the officer’s legs as tools spilled, and Johnson was later arrested.
Police said the pursuit reached Detroit, where Johnson tried to strike several police vehicles; debris from the damaged trailer also damaged at least one police vehicle. ThisIsButter reported that investigators said he drove into oncoming traffic and reached about 90 mph. The chase ended on Keystone Street, where he abandoned the pickup and fled on foot. The Metro Detroit News reported that police arrested him after he tried to disguise himself on a porch.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office charged Johnson with second-degree fleeing a police officer, breaking and entering without breaking with intent, resisting or obstructing a police officer causing injury, and assault with a dangerous weapon. Prosecutors also filed a fourth-offense habitual-offender notice. Magistrate Mark Makoski ordered him held on a $1 million cash-or-surety bond, with a steel-cuff tether and home confinement, and told him the notice meant he faced the possibility of life in prison. Johnson is due back in court Oct. 8 at 8 a.m.; police said the injured officer was treated and released.
