Pirates pitcher Kirby Yates announced Saturday that he is retiring immediately after Detroit beat Pittsburgh. His final appearance ended in the second inning, when catcher Henry Davis handed him the game ball and teammates hugged him as he left the mound.
Yates appeared in 46 games for the Angels and Pirates this season, going 2-5 with a 3.19 ERA and three saves. He began the year on the injured list with left-knee inflammation, was traded to Pittsburgh on Aug. 3, and was sidelined by a shoulder injury in September. He retires with a 32-29 career record, a 3.35 ERA and 101 saves across eight teams.
Yates had previously said he was looking forward to spending more time with his family. He told MLB.com that his children wanted him home as much as possible.
