Keeleigh John, 28, is 14 weeks pregnant after receiving a liver and kidney transplant at 12 for chronic renal failure. Doctors had said she was unlikely to have children, and she says the donor family’s decision to donate made the pregnancy possible.
John said she learned she was pregnant on the day she returned home from hospital after recovering from four bouts of sepsis this year. At 14 weeks, she said the baby looked healthy and tests made it “almost impossible” for a condition she has to pass to the baby.
John campaigns for organ donation. NHS Blood and Transplant figures show deceased donation rates are 9% lower than at the same point last year, while the UK transplant waiting list has reached a record high. The NHS recently launched its first “urgent response plan” to address the drop in organ donations.
