Liverpool have appointed Julian Ward as sporting director, putting the former Fenway Sports Group technical director in charge of the football operation. He succeeds Richard Hughes, who left the post at the start of the month to move to Saudi club Al-Hilal.
Ward joined Liverpool in 2012 and initially worked across player development, recruitment and scouting. The article says he is thought to have played a major role in the signings of Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Alex Mac Allister.
Ward will work with assistant sporting director David Woodbine, chief scout Barry Hunter and FSG director of football development Pedro Marques. FSG president Mike Gordon said Ward’s expertise would strengthen Liverpool’s football operations and support head coach Andoni Iraola.
