Jim Copenhaver, 76, died Wednesday at a Pittsburgh hospital, more than two years after he was shot twice at the July 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The cause of death is under investigation; one bullet left him with nerve damage.
Copenhaver was struck in the bicep, and a second round lodged near his spine. He underwent numerous surgeries; a lawsuit he filed against the federal government in June said he would need further operations.
The attack killed firefighter Corey Comperatore and wounded another spectator and Donald Trump. The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by the Secret Service. Trump called Copenhaver’s death a “tremendous loss,” and House Republicans said they were saddened.
