Brian Laundrie's parents still live in North Port, Florida, five years after Gabby Petito's death. Neighbors told the Daily Mail some avoid the couple; one said she leaves dog waste on their lawn. They were never criminally charged in Petito's death.
The Petitos sued Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, alleging they knew Brian had killed Gabby and withheld information during the search. The Laundries denied the allegations. A confidential settlement in 2024 ended the case without a public trial. Separately, a judge awarded $3 million to Gabby's estate in a 2022 wrongful-death case against Brian's estate.
The FBI's final investigative update said it did not identify anyone besides Brian as directly involved in Petito's death. The Teton County coroner determined she died from blunt-force injuries to the head and neck and manual strangulation. Brian's remains were found in Florida in October 2021; a notebook found with him contained statements taking responsibility. Petito's family continues missing-person and domestic-violence advocacy through the Gabby Petito Foundation.
