The Jets called rookie wide receiver Malik McClain up from the practice squad to replace Arian Smith, one of three receivers on injured reserve alongside Omar Cooper and Tim Patrick. Coach Aaron Glenn said McClain will get a chance at receiver and on special teams.
McClain had three catches for 33 yards on six targets in three preseason games. Glenn said the rookie still has development ahead. For Week 3 against Detroit, the Jets will elevate either veteran Sterling Shepard or Tyler Johnson.
Smith is out for the season, while the Jets expect Cooper back at some point. Adonai Mitchell practiced Friday with his hand heavily bandaged because of a finger injury and was still a possibility to play.
