Sumatran orangutan Nettie died earlier this month aged 43 after spending 15 years at Jersey Zoo. Keepers remembered her as a keen observer of visitors and a gentle mother to Jantho, born in 2013; the zoo’s ape house, briefly closed after her death, has reopened.
Jersey Zoo operations director Mark Habben said Jantho and the other apes showed signs of mourning. He said they came to see Nettie and then returned to their usual activities, with their survival instincts taking priority.
