Specialist contractors will continue masonry repointing on Guernsey’s Castle Cornet breakwater in the coming weeks, after work on its exposed southern end last year. Guernsey Ports deferred the work until the castle bridge closed to avoid extra public inconvenience.
The southern end nearest the lighthouse was repointed last year and is exposed to the full force of weather and sea; work there will continue before crews tackle the northern section. Guernsey Ports project manager Joe Armstrong said the breakwater protects St Peter Port Harbour and regular inspections help identify where preventative maintenance is needed.
The castle bridge’s 95m (312ft) concrete deck and single-span approach bridge are being replaced in a £6.2m project that started this month and is expected to last eight months.
